Message from GA Division

Division of Global Architecture aims to advance science and technology for the construction, maintenance, and management of mega-scale facilities and structures, such as infrastructure that supports civic life, buildings that serve as living spaces, ships that support logistics, and transportation facilities for realizing a better society. Against natural disasters such as earthquakes, typhoons, and heavy rain that have frequently occurred in recent years, the spread of new infectious diseases such as COVID-19, and population decline in our country, it is an urgent issue to efficiently build a resilient, safe, and more secure society. From the perspective of the SDGs proposed by United Nations, which aim the sustainability of humankind, civilization, and the natural environment, one of our missions is to build a decarbonized society, such as development of renewable energy (offshore wind, geothermal power, etc.) and the energy saving technologies of mega-scale facilities and structures.

Our division was constructed by uniting three departments of “Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering”, “Civil Engineering” and “Architectural Engineering”. This division of “Global architecture” is unique to Osaka University in Japan. This integration of three departments enables flexible and fluid collaboration between each academic field. We are also promoting interdisciplinary research and education under collaboration with various countries and institutions such as private companies and governments.

Our country is isolated in the sea, with insufficient natural resources, so that, the ocean transportation is quite essential to import the primary material, energy resource and food. Various urban facilities such as domestic transportation networks and social infrastructure are so important to support the foundation of industry and daily life, and the architecture that provides safe, secure and comfortable living space is essential for the happiness of people. Our division is providing the curriculum and research facilities/program to nurture students towards becoming a specialist of this important study area and contribute to society, acting internationally and locally. Our faculty are expecting students who would have high intension and motivation to contribute the society and people in the world. I am looking forward to welcoming you.

Prof Inui Toru,
Head of Division of Global Architecture

Course

The education and research in the division of Global Architecture aim to realize a harmonious human society in balance with nature. This is achieved through the integration of natural sciences, human culture, and engineering; the pursuit of comfort in harmony with limited resources; and the creation and advancement of cutting-edge technologies and systems. With a focus on a sustainable future for the Earth, the program seeks to cultivate individuals capable of building an attractive human society, as well as nurturing global talents with strong ethical standards and leadership.

  • Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering
We strive to develop engineers capable of utilizing marine artificial structures, including ships, offshore wind turbines and marine renewable energy devices, and platforms, to tackle global challenges from a maritime perspective. The students will study topics such as design, analysis, digital twin, autonomy, marine environment, etc.
  • Civil Engineering
The social infrastructure encompasses roads, railways, harbors, airport, river, water and sewage facilities, energy and information-related facilities, and so on. The students will study a wide range of professional subjects to become technical experts who can contribute to the formation and use of a sustainable society where we can feel secure and safe life.
  • Architectural Engineering
We conduct education and research to promote flexible and rich ideas, precise logic, and wide range of knowledge which are needed in construction of structures. The students can acquire high-level insight and knowledge appropriate for architects and architectural experts through learning various subjects on architecture, such as design, environment, equipment, structure, production, and so on.
  • International Program of Maritime and Urban Engineering
This program is an international graduate program tailored for international students, focusing on the three engineering fields mentioned above. It aims to nurture global leaders capable of addressing future societal challenges. Each student is assigned to a laboratory, where they can collaborate with both Japanese and other international students working in the same research field.
